Having trouble installing blobdetector via pip over SSL

I have recently had trouble following the install instructions for FieldPapers at the pip install BlobDetector step. All other pip installs work without issue. The following ticket was recently opened in the FieldPapers repo:

stamen/fieldpapers#300

which reports an issue Error while getting https://github.com/downloads/migurski/Blobdetector/BlobDetector-1.0.0.tar.gz which is similar to the error I have seen.
