I am trying to capture minidv tapes with vrecord/dvrescue using a Panasonic AG-HVX200 camcorder as a deck with dvpackeger set to QuickTime.

Problem:
resulting .mov files won't open in QuickTime:

Error message:
The document “test13repack_part1.mov” could not be opened.
THe file isn't compatible with QuickTime Player.

Possible related problem?:
in vrecord capture doesn't stop after specified time (2) so I stopped it manually with escape.

Terminal window:
Starting the vrecord GUI. To bypass the GUI, run like 'vrecord FILENAME'.

If I set dvpackager to matroska it does make an mkv file that opens in VLC. If I then use ffmpeg to rewrap the mkv to mov I get these errors. Maybe this provides a clue to what's going on:

ffmpeg -i /Volumes/ThunderBay4_BBO/BB\ DV\ Capture/ID1187_The_Basics_of_PKD_#10_Lisa_M.Guay-Woodford_part2.mkv -c:v copy -c:a copy /Volumes/ThunderBay4_BBO/BB\ DV\ Capture/ID1187_The_Basics_of_PKD#10_Lisa_M.Guay-Woodford_part2.mov

sounds like this is related to #950

@billbrand it sounds like you are experiencing a similar problem as is described in issue #950 which was resolved by installing this version of the daily builds for the GUI and CLI for DVRescue. Would you mind installing these snapshots and see if they resolve the issue for you?

If this version doesn't work, will you please take the following steps and share the results here?

  • Make sure that the version of the DVRescue GUI you are using is installed in the Applications folder.
  • Open the Terminal.app and launch DVRescue by running this command: /Applications/dvrescue.app/Contents/MacOS/dvrescue --log.
  • Go to the packager tab and open the file you want to package.
  • Select the segmenting rules that you want.
  • Click "apply."
  • Select MOV as the wrapper.
  • Click "add to queue."
  • Wait for DVRescue to finish packaging your files.
  • Quit DVRescue (click the x at the top of the application window).
  • Go back to Terminal and run this command cat ~/Library/Containers/net.MediaArea.dvrescue.mac-gui/Data/dvrescue-gui_logs/dvrescue-gui.log
  • Copy the log that pops up and paste it into https://gist.github.com/ and save it.
  • Add the link to this thread so it can be reviewed for possible troubleshooting.

@billbrand for reference, the command used in the CLI to package by the user who had the same issue as you that was resolved by installing new versions of the daily build used the following command:

dvpackager -e mov -a n INPUT.dv

@libbyhopfauf and @billbrand as I put in the latest reply to #950 the CLI was never fixed and the GUI is only working sporadically, and actually is exhibiting a new problem (that ill review other issues for) where the XML is truncated (stopping around 300 frames in). If you are using mac OS 12 or 13 I would not recommend using 24.07.20241026 because the XML truncation issue happens with it, whereas just v24.07 is not exhibiting that problem. The MOV header is still being broken in the dvpackager CLI. Still working with my team to try and get closer to identifiying the exact dependency or ffmpeg library that's stopping the header from writing properly. For now it looks like the Sample Description Atom (stsd) is at least throwing errors in ffmpeg/movmetaedit.

@JaredGibsonAVF would you mind testing the same command for the CLI, but using MKV as the extension? It sounds like that worked for @billbrand. Would you both mind sending sample files of the DV and MOV files that you are experiencing issues with?

@billbrand @JaredGibsonAVF as I mentioned in issue #954 related to this, there is an issue on FFmpeg's end related to MOV and DV.
