A good first step (which I'll try to make a PR for once I get up and running) is to implement the USB Ethernet so at least the device can be SSH'd to.

The recipe would be quite simple, copying in the systemd service in the debian folder, the dnsamasq configs, and the scripts to /usr/bin.
