Running Ubuntu 16.04 on XPS13 9530 with QHD and NVMe. Couldn't install previous versions of Ubuntu, mostly because of the NVMe. The current one works without major problems. Touchpad occasionally crashes, and many linux applications are not intended for the QHD display (which has nothing to do with the laptop, just want to mention it).

This sounds interesting. If I understood correctly, this kernel patch is
currently on Xenial.

What configuration did you apply to you laptop? Are you using synclient?

Hi guys, a quick update. I have installed last night the 16.04. Until now everything seems to be working fine. except for the palm detection.

you have to install the xorg libinput driver which is not installed by default.

@dahabakuk thanks, I was wondering that too. Is it necessary to do something to switch over to libinput as the driver? or just sudo apt-get install xserver-xorg-input-libinput ?

I upgraded from 15.10 to 16.04 and I have got graphical glitches since. Quite annoying. I will tweak my kernel parameters. Currently using:
GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT="quiet splash pcie_aspm=force i915.enable_fbc=1 i915.enable_rc6=7"

@rpbaptist I'm also seeing graphics glitches since upgrading to 16.04. Pretty short distortions but still noticeable. Do let us know if you find a good work around for that!

I have these "short distortions" on 15.10. Do not know how to debug - they're pretty rare. It happens just a few times in a week.

@jeandersonbc it might be related to secure boot. When I upgraded the system didn't detect any network card. I saw some articles outlining a change in 16.04 that explains why but I can't seem to find it at the moment, disabling secure boot in the bios brought my WiFi back.

@JherezTaylor funny fact: I just checked my BIOS setup. It explicity informs that I'm using legacy mode (using UEFI wouldn't allow me to boot Ubuntu) and Secure Boot is OFF.

Oh. Something else then. To anyone coming in from the future with a Broadcom WiFi card, disabling Secure Boot is what worked for me.

@JherezTaylor : On Ubuntu 16.04, in order to install kernel modules (e.g. for Virtualbox or Wireless driver ) you need to disable Secure Boot. I don't really know why, but I couldn't find a way around it.

I have another question. I have installed Ubuntu 16.04 in dual boot, but when I turn the laptop on, on the screen I see 'booting in insecure mode', which delays the boot of a bunch of seconds. Does anyone have the same issue?

Does anyone here have an issue with the system time being wrong on each boot? Background info: Dell XPS 9343, dual booting Ubuntu 16.04 and Windows 10. Often when I shut down and boot into either Windows or Ubuntu the system time will be off by 8+ hours. The timezone is set correctly and everything. Ubuntu usually syncs itself but for Windows I have to go and set it to sync manually every time. I don't think it's the CMOS battery because the machine is less than a year old. Thoughts?

Ubuntu 16.04 on XPS 13 is a hot mess. Graphical glitches and full X freezes.

I was running 15.10 and it was very stable. I'm going back.

No, I got distortions when alt+tabbing through windows, flickering in chrome and all around freezes.

I installed intel graphic drivers, tried various kernels. I used the DRM Intel Nightly build which helps against the crashing, but not the glitches.

Which model do you have guys? Everything is working perfectly on the XPS 13 9343 with Ubuntu Gnome 16.04. The only two things I had to configure: 1. Bluetooth 2. Palm detection

16.04 also working nicely for me without much config (just turning on palm detection). screen glitches seem better for me since rolling back to the 4.4 kernel from 4.5; though may persist occasionally on external display

By the way, I haven't any problem with Bluetooth. Only the annoying Chrome glitches sometimes.

Hello everyone,
I've updated from 14.04 to 16.04 two weeks ago. Everything is working but with little issues, as @rpbaptist says my external monitor is blinking randomly, not enough frequently to be a annoying.
Also when I try to update packages it cannot configure linux-image-4.4... and related packages, but it is working fine.

I am on Dell xps 9343 with Ubuntu 16.10 Gnome. Everything fine at first. I just discovered there is also some palm detection it seems...;

However my wifi worked since install 2 weeks or so; today I got errormessage mentioning something about it, but wifi continued to work. Now after restart does not work at all; reinstall of drivers does not help. Anyone else?

Others have also reported graphical glitches resulted from upgrading to 16.04 rather than a fresh install; perhaps related to the issues I and some others have reported? http://askubuntu.com/questions/763672/16-04-how-to-purge-intel-default-drivers-reinstall-intel-graphic-drivers The suggested fix is simply re-installing the intel graphics drivers. Also, I do wonder if the lack of the of the proprietary intel driver (https://01.org/linuxgraphics/downloads ) for 16.04 could also explain why things were looking better on 15.10?

Yes I was kind of surprised but I am on 16.10 somehow; it was the only Gnome I found. It was a fresh install. Basically everything, also grapics are grand (but do not use external monitor...), except for the issue I am having now with wifi. I now work with my mobile phone via usb tethering, but I really would like to have my laptop wifi back. There are no error messages when installing drivers.

Looking into some Google Chrome Help Forum threads, I may have found a possible solution for those annoying glitches.
Here the link to the thread.
Summarizing you have to run:
sudo gedit /usr/share/applications/google-chrome.desktop
and at line Exec=/usr/bin/google-chrome-stable %U append the following --disable-gpu-driver-bug-workarounds --enable-native-gpu-memory-buffers

I have tried right now and I'm not seeing any glitches. I'll keep you posted.

After a fresh install my mouse cursor is Huge in Chrome.

But no where else in the OS. I think it might be from Chrome sniffing the dpi from x11. But I haven't figured out how to resolve the issue.

Got fed up with the wifi problem. Made a fresh install of 16.04 this time. Working swell.

I followed the steps listed by @cboettig and running kernel 4.5.3. I still have glitches, but no freezes (yet).

When glitches start to appear, I restart the x-session (ctrl+alt+esc in Cinnamon) and it is okay again for a while.

This is currently my workaround.

What is the status of Ubuntu 16.04 on the 9343 as of today (8 July 2016)?

I'm still running 15.10 with kernel 4.2 - everything works, and pretty stable too (apart from some rare random freezes once a month or so). But now 15.10 support is nearing its end of life, so I will probably have to upgrade soon to keep receiving security updates.

Does sound work? Does video work? Touchpad? The 7265 wifi? Is there a stable kernel version that I can stick to?

With my 9343 I was on 15.10 and everything worked perfectly. I upgraded to 16.04 and since then I have graphical glitches when switching to external monitor. System hangup when logging out and x display freezes when changing display mode.

Sound sometimes crashes and my headphone isn't detected anymore or receives no sound.

I am considering reinstalling 15.10 for some time now or waiting out the next minor update for Xenial.

If I were you I'd stick with 15.10 as long as possible. I am using kernel 4.5.7 which is least problematic for me.

I've upgraded my XPS 13 9343 from 14.04.5 LTS to 16.04.1 LTS last week.

The upgrade went kind of smooth, apart from the updater trying to roll-back the upgrade in the end due to some detected shortcoming (I don't remember the error message). After rebooting, lsb_release -a said "Ubuntu 16.04.1 LTS". (Interestingly, the "About This Computer" dialog continues to show "14.04 LTS".)

I'm noticing the battery life is dramatically reduced since the upgrade, though. I used to work for more than a full working day with a full battery, now it's almost half of it.

• Specifically, with battery power below 10% I used to be able to continue for hours. Now it's just minutes, half an hour or less.
• The applet behavior was such that it used to go to 5%, and then to 2%, then a "Critically low" warning would pop up, and when I left the computer alone it would go back to non-critical (in a way that the percentage went up again and another normal "low battery" warning would show again from the applet).
• Now when I get a "10%" warning I need to make sure that a power cable is around. Minutes afterwards there will be a "Critically low" warning -- and I'm not even running Docker or a Virtual Machine in the background that would consume any power (as, I remember, I had on 14.04 regularly).

Is anybody else experiencing the same issue? I don't see it being reported on Launchpad.

without using the wifi I can stay ~7h without a single charge with wifi ~3h or a bit more

I get about 8 hours on the 9350 model with Fedora 24 with light usage, mainly atom and a few opera tabs open. Are you running TLP?
