It is entirely possible that smartcrop focuses on areas of a photo that humans wouldn't consider the "right" result.

To get a better idea where it goes wrong (and if we can indeed tweak its settings a bit), I'd suggest enabling the DebugMode setting. This will produce sample images for each step of the analysis process.
