A Stacked Range Bar Chart would allow users to plot ranges of values as discrete bars, particularly suitable for comparing data across distinct categories where each category has multiple related values or ranges. Unlike existing chart types such as area charts (which imply continuity and fill to the axis) or stacked bar charts (which add values together), a Stacked Range Bar Chart would simply show the spans between different values, including negative numbers, without inappropriately connecting them or summing them. This chart type would be particularly valuable for visualizing data like temperature ranges across different locations, latitude spans of continents, or climate data showing daily, monthly, and record temperatures - essentially any dataset where you have discrete categories (on the x-axis) and want to show multiple related ranges or spans of values (on the y-axis) without implying continuity between the categories or inadvertently summing the values.
There are a few challenges with this type of chart, for example that if you have n values in a category you have n-1 colors in between them. That might be solved by also allowing a colormap.
@mwaskom I was curious if you were interested in having such a chart in Seaborn.

MinutePhysics proposed a type of chart last week, the Stacked Range Bar Chart (video):
