Happens when software expects an interaction with the NFC chip (e. g. after pressing A at the Amiibo box in Splatoon), which is strange, since I thought that's what error 165-6596 was... or does that one mean the chip is disconnected and this one that it's straight up faulty? Don't currently have the tools to open the gamepad up and have a look but I'll update once I do...

Alright so I finally got around to opening the gamepad and the NFC chip appears to be connected just fine, so it's either that it's somehow just straight up faulty or there's some other issue... perhaps the fact it's an NTSC-U gamepad on a PAL console which means it can't actually update itself? Honestly not sure. Might just end up ordering a new NFC chip eventually since they are pretty cheap and hopefully that'll fix it...
