error compiling: target directory missing dialog when directory actually exists

This worked fine until recent IDEA 9 versions. I always get the' ""' not exists dialog even for a directory with exits. I am using "target/generated-sources/protoc" as my output directory (integrating with the protobuf maven plugin).
