Testing environment.

I signed-up for the beta test certification exam, paid the fee, scheduled the test, logged-in on-time.

Communicated with the proctor. At this point I would expect to take the test.

To my surprise the test is done via remote desktop (VNC) through Chrome. The expectation from the test facilitators is that people will write code doing remote desktop sharing through a web browser.

Certainly, I have written code on remote machines. I avoid it as much as possible but sometimes its necessary. In those circumstances I choose vim/ssh. Who actually tries to program a computer via remote desktop using VNC through google chrome? I would rather vacation at a Siberia Gulag in January.

I think anybody with some programming experience would question the usability of this set-up.

I just cant imagine how the facilitators would deem this reasonable.

I strongly encourage anybody considering this OpenJS/NodeJS certification – know what to expect.

Further I would like to know the number of those who paid the fee, completed the test, and what was their experience.

I enjoyed the test. 2 hours of coding is much better than those other strange tests with multiple choice.

You get a Linux VM with a code editor and a terminal to write / test your code. You could use vi if you wanted, but there was no super complex code, any of those answers could be written on a napkin.
It's remote since it's much more convenient than going to a test centre and doing exactly the same thing there.

I am/was disappointed with VNC'ing to a remote machine. It had taken 30 minutes for the proctor and I to get set-up. It takes 30 minutes for me to drive to the local test center, so I don’t share your opinion, though I do value it.

@ChrisGCampbell - I was on a mailing list forever.. Then they sent inventions to be beta testers. I am not sure if it is still available.

That's not possible for lots of people, don't forget this it's an international exam.

I took the tests in a third world country wi-fi connection and everything was fine. Still, I agree that there's a lot of disinformation. Doing the test through VNC shouldn't be a surprise.

I know is beta testing, but some aspects like the OS (I had to use CentOS, which I have never used before) or resources limitations should be clearly exposed long before you even pay for your exam.

But there were multiple documents published.. FAQ, Exam Tips, Handbook.. they said that you could only use a browser and that you can't cancel your exam 24 hours before the exam since they provision a VM for you..
Some of the information on the exam format was still missing of course, but.. what did you expect to see there if I may ask?

Theoretically you can, because you have access to the terminal and you can install any package, but I think you would lose too much time for that. You have only 2 hours.

Just had the worst experience.

Got a warning for using alt+tab (switches windows on host accidentally, instead of inside VNC).

Tech support wasted the last 45 mins of my test, despite assuring me the timer was paused it was in fact, not.

Completely incompetent. Have to request a re-sit/refund.
