Note - please check that the term does not already exist (check OLS: https://www.ebi.ac.uk/ols/ontologies/cl)

Preferred term label
early spermatid

Synonyms (add reference(s), please)

Definition (free text, with reference(s), please. PubMed ID format is PMID:XXXXXX)
The early round stage of spermatid maturation

Parent cell type term (check the hierarchy here https://www.ebi.ac.uk/ols/ontologies/cl)
http://purl.obolibrary.org/obo/CL_0000018

What is the anatomical structure that the cell is a part of? (check Uberon: https://www.ebi.ac.uk/ols/ontologies/uberon)
http://purl.obolibrary.org/obo/UBERON_0000079

Preferred term label
late spermatid

Synonyms (add reference(s), please)

@s-carney, thank you for the new terms.

The following have been added to CL and should appear in the next release:

CL:4030036 'early spermatid'
CL:4030037 'late spermatid'

Additional details can be found in the linked PR.

@bvarner-ebi @s-carney
I reopen this issue for some clarifications:
this recent and interesting paper https://www.nature.com/articles/s41586-022-05547-7
reports many different cells related to spermatogenesis, and reports 'early round' and 'late round' spermatids, but also 'elongated spermatid', see Suppl Table 3 https://static-content.springer.com/esm/art%3A10.1038%2Fs41586-022-05547-7/MediaObjects/41586_2022_5547_MOESM4_ESM.xlsx

CELL_TYPE
Undifferentiated_Spermatogonia
Leptotene_Spermatocytes
Differentiated_Spermatogonia
Zygotene_Spermatocytes
Pachytene_Spermatocytes
Early_Round_spermatids
Late_Round_spermatids
Elongated_spermatids
NA
Other_somatic
Sertoli
Spermatogonia
Spermatocytes
Round_spermatids

While the definition of CL_4030036 (early spermatid)
such as available here ae31324
does correspond to 'early round spermatid', this is not the case for CL_4030037 (late spermatid) and 'late round spermatid' but instead CL_4030037 (late spermatid) is the description of 'elongated spermatid'

In the field of spermatogenesis (and as also in embryology for example) 'late' and 'early' should be associated to another word to let the meaning be fully understandable, I guess

At the end, for the list of cell types here above, I guess I will map (so far?):

  • all 'Round_spermatids' AND 'Early_Round_spermatids' AND 'Late_Round_spermatids' to CL_4030036 (early spermatid)
  • Elongated_spermatids to CL_4030037 (late spermatid)

Any help or comments are welcome!
