some useful ideas

parsing csv

reader = csv.csvreader(csvfile)
result = np.array([[magic(col) for col in row] for row in reader])

def magic(s):
    if '/' in s:
        return datetime(s)
    elif '.' in s:
        return float(s)
    else:
        return int(s)
