Introduction

OMDL is a simple way to export mashups consisting of pages, layouts and widgets for use in
other applications.

For example, OMDL can be used to export a profile page or a workspace from a portal or social
network and import it into another.

Alternatively, OMDL can be used as part of a workflow for authoring mashups for users,
starting with a conceptual design, adding the structure, then specific widgets and layouts, and
then importing the description into a platform such as Apache Rave.

About OMDL

Strategic Overview

A Brief Guide for Programmers and Developers

Examples

Examples/UCs of how it might be used, preferably with pictures

Related specifications

W3C Widgets

W3C Widgets is a specification for describing packaged web applications; widgets within a mashup
described using OMDL can be W3C Widgets, or other types of web app such as OpenSocial.

EMML

GadgetTabML

GadgetTabML is the format used when exporting your settings from iGoogle. It consists of
an XML structure that includes tabs, layouts, sections and modules (gadgets). So conceptually, OMDL is very similar to
GadgetTabML and it should be possible to transform one into the other.

Unfortunately, there is no "official" documentation on GadgetTabML on the web, and although there have been some
calls to standardise the format, nothing has happened so far.

OpenSocial

OpenSocial is a specification for hosted web apps using social network APIs; widgets within a
mashp described using OMDL can be OpenSocial apps, or other types of web app such as W3C Widgets.

OPML

OPML is an outline format used for things like feed subscription lists. OPML is a generic structure
format rather than specific to mashups.
