gitbook serve and gitbook pdf are not working in the README.md

After reaching the section of the readme that asks the user to try
gitbook serve
or
gitbook pdf ./ ./compliance.pdf

neither command is working. When the make commands are tried instead an error is thrown by make when attempting the gitbook command

I'm on linux ubuntu 14.04 but I also tried those commands through gitBash on Windows 10. I was able to serve it through other means.
