Additional information to support your request

There are a few GitHub activities that can generate a new protected branch in the repo. One is if a maintainer clicks the pencil icon to make a quick change to a file. The other is reverting a commit from the PR detail page. I'm sure I'll find another one.

There's branch protection that needs to be turned off first, which is not available to maintainers.
