I'm not convinced this is a real issue for iD users: The title/heading above the search bar is quite descriptive in the two different cases (Select feature type versus Search features). Also, the walkthrough teaches explains the feature type selection quite extensively to new users.
That said, I guess it would not hurt to make the placeholder text on the search bar a bit more distinctive: Search feature type vs. Search feature or coordinate perhaps
If we enter a Y,X into the search box,
everything is fine. It just works...
Except
Except if a feature just happens to be selected when we enter our Y,X,
In which case we will hit the ">" arrow to see the "1 result"...
Which alas, turns out to be "no results". We go back to the state we were in before we entered the Y,X. Bug!
You might say
User responds: "But the search box looked about the same."
OK, we return to the scene of the incident to see if the "search box looked about the same" or not,
Indeed it is
So technically the user still is to blame. Technically.
But still the arrow with the promise of "1 feature" that becomes 0 features is a bug at least.
