Sources list hangs on apt update. Is reason it's setup the way it is?

I installed recently and found running an update sometimes hangs or just freezes altogether. I try to use the appcenter but it can take awhile and I'm assuming it's hitting the same problem.

When I run an apt update it hangs. If I get through the update it will freeze up on package download. It shows all kinds of different mirrors. I looked at the apt sources.list and saw references to mirrors.txt? I changed these lines to point directly to Ubuntu (deb http://us.archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu jammy...) and the problem was immediately fixed on the next apt update and run.

Is there a reason the sources list points to these mirrors.txt files on a server verses going directly to ubuntu?
