Topics to tag repositories

I think we should curate topics used to tag our repositories.

This would contribute to make repositories more "discoverable" by search.

Here is the page with the list of used topics: https://github.com/orgs/euroargodev/topics

1st guess

In Nov. 2021 I made sure that all repositories had, at least, the two topics: "argo" and "argo-floats"

But "argo" is basically useless because many other projects/companies also use it (see for eg: https://github.com/search?q=argo&type=topics)

On the other hand, "argo-floats" is more useful because more specific. The github topics search for argo-floats leads to one topic at: https://github.com/topics/argo-floats with currently 11 public repositories matching it.

which can be further refined by programming language: python, Matlab or R (which returns no results despite the fact that BGC folks use it a lot)

Next ?

I've seen that we can improve the description of Github topics, so this may be worst doing for Argo floats related projects.

We would need a more precise and regular rounds of repo curation to make ensure our euroargodev community is filling in appropriate topics.

I just gave it a try at: github/explore#2962

Our problem is that they are many organisations and repositories dedicated to Argo than what is suggesting the argo-floats topic.

The proposition was accepted, so we now have a fully document Github topic about "argo-floats" at:

https://github.com/topics/argo-floats

This means that we all should add the "argo-floats" topic to our repositories to make them discoverable

Hey @gmaze before I saw this discussion I added the topic argo-under-ice for some repositiories to make them easily discoverable

we can have as many topics as we wish, they help determine very efficiently what a repo is about

"argo-floats" is the bare minimum for any repo dealing with Argo
