OpenFGA is now a CNCF Sandbox Project

We are thrilled to announce that OpenFGA has been accepted as a CNCF Sandbox project.

Since we open sourced it in June 2022, we’ve seen an enormous amount of activity around the project, where the community contributed or built features like:

• A MySQL storage adapter
• An SDK for ASP.NET Core, Quarkus and Elixir contributed by the community, and a Python SDK, contributed by the OpenFGA core team
• An OpenFGA / SCIM Bridge
• DSL parsers in different languages (Rust, WASM, Python)
• Open Policy Agent Integration
• Keycloak Integration
• A Helm chart

We believe there’s an opportunity to create a large ecosystem around a product like OpenFGA, and that being part of CNCF will maximize the chances for this to happen. The project contributors could build integrations for :

• Authorization policies products like OPA
• Proxies like Envoy
• API gateways like Kong
• Identity providers (Auth0, Okta, AzureAD),
• SDKs for platforms and frameworks like Java, Spring, Next.js, etc

We think the industry will benefit by having a common way to manage Fine Grained Authorization, we believe the community around OpenFGA can help make this happen, and that the CNCF will provide the right environment for it to flourish.

Being accepted as a CNCF Sandbox project is just the beginning of a journey. We hope to work together with partners and the community as a whole to reach the CNCF Incubation stage and then become a Graduated project.

We want to thank everybody that is participating on the OpenFGA project in one way or another, and we hope we’ll continue to work together in this next chapter.
