Default JVM (2024)

Hi all, we’ve just passed a fun milestone in that Java 21 is now 1 year old!

This, in accordance with our policies, means that it’s time to bump the default version of Java that we ship with the Paketo buildpacks. We are presently queuing up PRs to make this change across all of the JVM vendor buildpacks and once all of those are ready, we’ll merge & cut a release. The tentative timeline for this will be by the end of this month (October 2024). It will result in a new major version of all the impacted buildpacks.

As an FYI, this is just changing the default. You may set BP_JVM_VERSION=17 if you’d like to remain on Java 17 for a longer period of time, however, Java 21 is great so we strongly encourage you to give it a try!
