Best practice

Should we go for incremental improvements, or focus on best practices which might require larger changes?
Eg. should we use TLS certificates and find way to handle/update them, or should we use a solution based on some kind of passwords?
Requirement for encryptions might be case for MQTT, since it handles it already, based on TLS certificates. You can also use QUIC.
