Nether Portal block does not render when portals are directly adjacent

The nether portal block fails to render in when portals are directly adjacent. For example:

O: obsidian
P: portal block

O P P O -> renders fine

O P P O P P O -> renders fine

O P P O
O P P O -> does not render the portal blocks.
