Allow using client indices for *string columns #386

Currently, client index for *string column uses reference instead of strings to index and compare elements, which doesn't work.
I have experimented with npinaeva@c8a01c9 and it makes indexing work, but of course breaks other things.
Hopefully there is some simple enough solution for this case.
