Emoji autocomplete

There are upwards of 800 emojis available in any GitHub Flavored Markdown post. But how do you find the one you are looking for without scrolling through them all?

We feel your pain! So today we're announcing that we have added a feature, similar to the @mention autocomplete, where typing
:
will show you a list of emoji suggestions. Anything you type after the
:
will progressively filter the list. Then once you find the emoji you're looking for, just hit tab or enter to complete the highlighted result.

Columbus Drinkup #2

Nothing brings central Ohioans together in the fall like a Buckeyes game. Well, other than a friendly GitHub Drinkup that is.

I've had a lot of conversations over the past couple of years with people trying to figure out how to bring our amazing developer and designer communities together in Columbus. I think our drinkups are the perfect setting for mingling with each other to talk shop and explore the intersection of our crafts. As a designer at GitHub, I'd love to see more people who view themselves as purely creative types stop by and chat it up with the techies. We all have more in common than you might think.

So, join new-GitHubber and former-Ohioan @mattyoho and myself at The Three-Legged Mare this Thursday evening for drinks (on us, of course).

The Facts

Where: The Three-Legged Mare - we have the upstairs reserved

When: Thursday, October 11th, 7:00PM

GitHub for Mac: Username Autocompletion

Today’s release of GitHub for Mac adds the ability to autocomplete GitHub usernames right within the commit summary and description fields.

This works just like comment fields on GitHub.com. By typing
@
and then the start of either the username or name of the GitHub user you want to mention, you are greeted with a (rather wonderful) little popover:

Navigate with the arrow keys, or continue typing, to select your desired user. Hit
Return
or
Tab
to fill their username into the text field.

Goodbye Snow Leopard

Recently, with the vast majority of our users running at least Lion, we made the decision to no longer support Mac OS X 10.6. We also wanted to make use of the improvements available to developers in OS X 10.7 (Lion) and 10.8 (Mountain Lion).

Therefore, going forward, releases of GitHub for Mac will require an install of at least 10.7 to run. If you are running Snow Leopard, you simply won’t see any new updates and can continue to run your existing version.

We've added people, we've added materials, and we've been to more places on the planet to help make it easy for humans to use Git and GitHub. With a mere two million accounts on GitHub.com, we've got plenty more humans to talk to, but we're up for the challenge.

Introducing training.github.com

Of course all of this work is going to require us to refine our web presence a bit. I'm very happy to present to you the new training site:

The new site is your online connection to everything the training team is up to—and that's a lot:

A listing of current on-line and in-person events

Registration for online classes

Links to office hours

Links to free classes

GitHub training screencasts

External Git educational resources

Other speaking and teaching events the training team does all over Planet Earth

Team Growth

To support the increased training demand, we've enlisted the help of a developer and a designer inside GitHub. The designer, Coby Chapple, is largely responsible for the beautiful new training site we've just launched. The developer, Zachary Kaplan, is helping us build internal applications to streamline our proposal and client management processes. Look for more awesomeness from Zachary and Coby in the future.

Open-Source (Almost) Everything

We agree with our CEO's famous dictum that just about everything we do should be open-sourced. To that end, we've begun to release our very own training materials for you to use, modify, and share. We've got all of our open-source materials up on our beta teach.github.com site. Take a look, fork the repo, and send us a pull request!

Request an event

If you're interested in a private training session or in having a GitHubber speak at a conference you're organizing, please get in touch with us. We travel all over the world helping people know and love Git and GitHub better, so there's a good chance we can help you too. We are waiting to serve you.

Game Bytes #3

GitHub is a goldmine of resources for game developers. I'd like to introduce you to five open source projects that'll help you build your first, or next, amazing game. Check them out for your weekend projects, Game Jam entries, or day-to-day projects at work!

Introducing Torque 3D, Spring, Flixel, Three.js, and cocos2D...

Torque 3D

Torque 3D was recently open sourced by Garage Games along with several templates and tutorials to help you build 3D games for the Windows, Mac, Linux, XBOX 360, or Wii platforms. It comes with an impressive world-editing suite, and a ton of other features. It's open source, extremely customizable, and extendable through Torquescript.

If you've used it in the past and/or are interesting in joining the Torque 3D open source steering committee, please take a look at the membership charter (draft).

Flixel

Flixel is a great little library that is free for personal or commercial use and is easy to learn, extend, and customize. It was created by Adam "Atomic" Saltsman and written entirely in ActionScript. It's packed with some amazing features - all well-documented with examples and with source code readily available.

You might recognize one of these games that Adam created - Canabalt (a personal favorite of mine), Mode, Gravity Hook, and Fathom.

Three.js

Three.js is a lightweight 3D JavaScript library which provides renderers for HTML5's canvas, SVG and WebGL.
