Web site translation instructions
=================================
General information:
Every major page file is named PAGENAME.LANGUAGE.php, with exception
of english, that's named PAGENAME.php. Each page begins with a including
a header and ends with including a footer php file. The footer and
header, are header.LANGUAGE.php and footer.LANGUAGE.php respectively.
English is considered the default official project language and
everything should be updated in English first, and *then* in other
languages.
On a given file, special script in i18n.php checks if the translation
file modification date is earlier than original english document
modification date, and, if it is true, that means that translation is
outdated and a special message would be included in the document,
informing the site visitor that the translation is outdated.
That "outdated" warning message is in the file warning.LANGUAGE.html.
Be sure to make a translation from warning.html.
Adding new translation:
0) Download the whole website from the host shell.sourceforge.net,
directory /home/groups/kguitar/htdocs/. The easiest way to do it, I
guess, is making a tarball (or .tar.bz2) from the whole site on that
host and then downloading it via accessing
http://kguitar.sourceforge.net/site-tarball.tar.gz or whatever.
1) Add your language 2-letter code in i18n.php file, using the same
format of link <A CLASS=... blah-blah-blah>, pointing to your language
file. Ignore the PHP script, it is made to allow i18n.php to make links
to pages CURRENTPAGE.VARIOUSLANGUAGES.php. Add you language in the
alphabetical order to be most neutral.
2) Translate every file PAGENAME.php (that's an english version) in
file PAGENAME. Specials cases:
a) Don't touch GPL, leave it as is (in english)
b) Don't touch dates on the news page. They're pretty
international and don't need to be translated.
c) Don't touch any abbreviations, such as BTW, AFAIR and other
usenet common cludges. Leave it as is.
3) Translate warning.LANGUAGE.php from warning.html (I know that
warning.html is useless, it's only for translators purposes).
4) Upload the new translation to shell.sourceforge.net, in the same
directory. You should overwrite only 1 file - i18n.php. It's most
convinient to use "scp" to upload files via secure connection.
5) Set the proper permissions and owners on your files. Any file should
be 664 (rw-rw-r--) and have you as the owner (your unixname) and
"kguitar" as group owner. Any directory should be 775 (rwxrwxr-x). So,
don't forget to do:
chgrp kguitar *
chmod 664 *.YOURLANGUAGE.php
Updating website:
Any member of project have a right to update the page he needs to (don't
update the pages very often, though). If any member of a project updates
a page, he should:
1) Update english version first
2) Update any national versions he maintains
3) Upload his files (don't forget to check the permissions).
4) Post the "translation request" on kguitar-devel maillist for other
translations to update the webpage in their languages.
Any translator that would get the translation request should update the
local copy of english webpage on his disc, translate the requested
page and the upload his national page back to website.
Rules of thumb:
1) Don't overwrite files that don't belong to you. Don't occassionally
overwrite the other language's translation files. The only files you
should touch are your files and english files.
2) Always check the file permissions. If you'll leave the file
unwritable to everybody but you and then you'll occasionally quit the
internet that would be a *bad* thing...
3) When updating, always update the english translation.
4) Try to keep your translation as up-to-date as possible. It's not
terrible, however, if you couldn't update it as soon as you'll receive
the translation request - just add it to your "todo" list and do it
when you'd have time.

NLS localization instructions
=============================
General information:
--------------------
Official language is english. Every string in program should be in
english, including comments, program's messages, any printout, etc,
etc. Translation would be done internally by KDE with the help of .po
translation files.
Requirements:
-------------
Just install some sort of gettext package. I bet almost everybody has
it installed already.
Coders:
-------
Just add i18n() call to every string that need to be translated (i.e.
it's not a special music or whatever term that's always in latin words
or something like that. For example: instead of string "&Chord..."
write i18n("&Chord...")
This way it would be easy to rip out all the strings that need
translation from sources.
If you're including an i18n() call into any source, don't forget to do
#include <klocale.h>, as i18n() is defined in klocale.h file.
Translators - new translation:
------------------------------
Do the following: (assuming you're in the kguitar directory)
1) do "make -f admin/Makefile.common package-messages" in top directory
2) do "cd po"
3) copy kguitar.pot to YOURLANGUAGECODE.po
4) redo "make -f Makefile.cvs" and "./configure" in top directory to
regenerate Makefiles with support for your new .po
Now you have a clean untranslated template to translate. Proceed to the
"editing translation" section.
Translators - editing translation:
----------------------------------
Open the file "YOURLANGUAGECODE.po". Fill the header properly - don't
leave it untouched. It *is* important for official stuff.
Then the translation itself. It's easy - just enter the translation in
your language in empty quotes "" in msgstr lines, don't touch msgid
lines - they're for reference.
Please try to follow the style that your KDE language team
follows. Use all the words it uses... Or we'll end up with a bunch of
programs translated by a lot of people without a single standard. You
won't get a clue if a what one program calls "files" is the same thing
that other program calls "documents" or whatever... So, please be
careful and accurate with translation. Remember: it's up to you to
keep the translation clean and nice.
After editing, do "make" and "make install" in po directory.
Translators - updating translation:
-----------------------------------
As the program updates, new strings to translate would emerge. They
would show up untranslated in program. To update your translation do
two pretty simple things:
1) do "make -f admin/Makefile.common package-messages" in top directory
2) do "make merge" in po directory
It would merge new untranslated strings in your po file. Just search
for untranslated strings there now (like search for "") and translate
'em.

1) File "kguitar/kguitar_part.desktop" - add a line with
Comment[yourlanguagecode]=Translation of description
2) File "kguitar_shell/kguitar.desktop" - the same line
