Environment variables are good, but if we want to keep a *shrc relatively clean, it could be good to allow us to configure mates with a config file, like a .matesrc or .config/mates. I do not mean to drop support of environment variables, but just address different way of configuration.

PS: I do not know rust... maybe it's time to learn this new language to purpose my own patch :)

Even if it is only one config option, I was thinking about the mates_dir option, which may vary a lot from one user to another. But yes it's clearly enhancement.
