Sometimes, instead of using the autocompleter, I just type the username manually, or paste it in after copying. In such cases the form fails. I gather that it doesn't fill in the inner hidden field until you select an option from the auto-completer.

If you type a person's username manually, it should select that User regardless of autocomplete.

Your assumption is correct. I haven't had that use case yet. If it comes around I'll adjust the code. I think the solution is more difficult than it seems.

I think, when drop down list is empty, you probably should show "add" button that open window for adding new object
