searches don't work with dash

Sometimes suggest searches don't work because of the dash, so for example, I will get a suggestion to use lowell thomas papers: graphic materials, 1789 - 1984, bulk 1900 - 1981 as a search but get no results found. If I take the dashes out, like this lowell thomas papers: graphic materials, 1789 1984, bulk 1900 1981 I then get results back.
