How to use a local or in-tree Hatch Plugin

Hello, I have a project that I want to use hatch for but it requires some project-specific build steps. I've written a simple plugin to accomplish my task but I don't want to publish it to pypi as it won't be useful to others. Is there a way to use plugins found in the current directory or a local submodule? I tried adding PYTHONPATH to my default env but it seems the module/plugins aren't being loaded.

Thank you for the fast response! Sorry if this is a stupid question, I'm still getting used to pluggy/hatch, but I thought that was limited to just plugins that subclass BuildHookInterface. I'm trying to implement a custom VersionSourceInterface. Could I still use that same config parameter?

That is not supported but you could write a metadata hook where you could set the version https://hatch.pypa.io/latest/plugins/metadata-hook/custom/

Got it! So use a combination of metadata-hook and build-hook for local plugins

It seems to work! I'm still figuring out the semantics of the buildhook but that's a different issue. It would be nice if all of the plugin types could support custom but that's probably a stretch goal
