0) update CITATION.cff with version number and date
1) checkout main and merge in release branch (or just develop)
2) tag new version in main branch (git tag -a `newversion` -m `version message`)
2.5) remove any existing dist, build, egg, etc
3) python -m build
4) [optional] test distro upload with twine (twine upload --repository testpypi dist/*)
5) twine upload dist/* (pip install twine, not conda)
6) [maybe] update README.md to point to build and coverage status for main (should be ok develop and main both tracked by readme)
7) push to main to remote
