The commit 2a013b7 introduced a special case for packages containing -pie in CFLAGS or LDFLAGS. Unfortunately, my python3 installation on Ubuntu 18.04 has -specs=/usr/share/dpkg/no-pie-compile.specs in its CFLAGS, causing g++ to fail with
g++: error: /usr/share/dpkg/no-compile.specs: No such file or directory
