Regarding the symbol representation versus the text one, it seems similar to the discussion conducted in music-encoding/music-encoding#712. However, it is somehow the opposite of what you are suggesting. That is, not to have it a rendering option but instead an encoding one. |

Be aware that the symbol you are talking about (half of a non-arpeggio marker) may be used for various purposes, e.g. as a copymark (col primo violino): |

Now that I see this PR: #2696
I am wondering about left/right hand markers which look like half of these non-arpeggio markers:

Is this sort of symbol available in MEI currently?
Also more of an MEI issue perhaps, but it would be useful to be able to switch between this style of showing the same thing:
