Might be a good idea to move to Rugged instead of Grit.

Anyone want to volunteer?

Downside here is that it is a C extension. Not so good for building with JRuby?

Gollum has now moved to GitLab's fork of grit, which seems to be actively maintained. That could avoid the C-extension problems.
