Instructions for building and testing XOOPIC
NOTE: You may need to use GNU's make, instead of the make
utility provided by a commercial operating system.
If you're using Linux, then you already have GNU's
make. If you don't have GNU's make, you can find
it at http://www.gnu.org/software/make/make.html

If you don't have automake installed on your system, then
XOOPIC should build just fine. However, if you add
new source or header files, or your own executables, etc.,
then you must modify the Makefile.in files appropriately
and rerun the configure script (you can ignore all the
Makefile.am files).
If automake IS installed on your system -- guaranteed to be
true for Linux -- then
!! PLEASE READ THE FOLLOWING !!

If automake is installed on your system, then it is likely
that the configure script will invoke automake the first
time you use it.
In order to get automake/configure to work correctly on
all systems (IRIX was the culprit here), we had to patch
automake.
You can apply the Tech-X automake patch as follows (as root):
ABSAM=`whence automake`
AMBASEDIR1=`dirname $ABSAM`
AMBASEDIR=`dirname $AMBASEDIR1`
CURDIR=`pwd`
cd $AMBASEDIR
patch -p0 <$CURDIR/config/automake.diff
This patch separates AR and ARFLAGS as needed for instantiated
templates in some systems. (Irix requires CC -ar -o, rather
than ar cru, e.g.) This patch should not affect the use of
automake otherwise. Also, you should make certain that you
have up-to-date versions of autoconf and m4, if have automake.

A fix is in the present CVS snapshot of automake, but has not
made it into a release version. Tech-X has submitted the
above patch to the maintainers of automake at Cygnus.
If you choose to run automake after adding a new Makefile.am
(or editing an existing Makefile.am), then you must make sure
to run it as
"automake --include-deps --foreign"
to prevent intereference with the "make depend" targets. This
minor complication is necessary to get dependencies correct
for non-GNU compilers.

Instructions for specific operating systems --

IRIX6.5:
********
-fsquangle
The script attempts to guess whether you built gcc with the
-fsquangle flag, which does a compression of the methods names
in libstdc++.a.*. You may have to set this by hand if you
get an unsatisfied external. We have found -fsquangle to be
needed on IRIX6.5.
The m4 on many IRIX systems is archaic. For these system, you should
build m4 (version 1.4 or later), and autoconf. You will have to
remove or move aside /usr/sbin/m4 and /usr/bin/m4 to prevent these
from being used.

To build on CRAY systems use the following configure flags:
(assuming the XGRAFIX is built in $HOME)
prompt> ./configure --with-CC=cc --with-CXX=CC --with-XGmini
To build on CRAY systems with MPI use the following configure flags:
prompt> ./configure --with-CC=cc --with-CXX=CC --enable-MPI --with-XGmini
The CRAY MPI compiler defaults to CC and cannot be changed with a configure option.
