I'd like to make a note of a change I had to make. In order to successfully make a connection with the device, I had to change from using the RX/TX pins on the J2 connector, to the RXD/TXD on the J3 connector. J3 is the connector with SCL/SDA on it as well.
I confirmed proper functioning by connecting my COM port monitor with baud rate 74880, which is the ESP series default boot logbook baud rate.
Extra note: I was necessitated to disconnect Ground as well as VCC (3v3) in order to successfully reboot the ESP back into flashing mode. Simply disconnecting VCC (3v3) would often not reset the chip (or not fully) and behave erratically.
