This message is about XMPP, and PEP and PubSub as means to manage and synchronize bookmarks.
Libervia, Movim, and Rivista are publishing platforms that do not host any content on their own, and rather read Atompub/Atomsub PubSub nodes of XMPP accounts and services of XMPP server.
On the same premise, we have created Blasta, which makes use of PubSub as a platform to manage and synchronize bookmarks.
I think it would be good to use XMPP as an additional platform to host contents. XMPP also provides a mechanism to subscribe to nodes, which means that subscribers can be notified of new bookmarks of nodes that they are subscribed to.
Shaarli with support for XMPP[1] would easily turn Shaarli into a "social bookmarks" system.
[1]: Client mode should suffice; This is the XMPP mode which Blasta makes use of (i.e. connecting Shaarli to XMPP via a client Jabber ID, such as [email protected]).
