Why was verification pushed to an external website instead of being handled within the extension? The extension could do more work for the user, i.e. scanning the DOM of the profile page the user’s visiting and verifying each tweet that meets the spec, adding checkmarks to the DOM when valid.

The site is just a helper, you can use your own tools for verification if you choose. As for verification with the chrome ext, yes that's part of the roadmap.
