Ubuntu's default desktop environment Unity and the dark theme of elementary OS both use monochrome status bar icons. Let me illustrate this briefly:

Elementary:
It would be great if you could add support for these themes. My suggestion is the following: Add a distinct option (on/off) to choose whether a white monochrome icon should be used in place of the one which is used otherwise. I think this would offer great flexability for the user at a minimum of effort for you.
I've taken the liberty of even creating such an icon for you 😄 Here is a preview:
