Custom profile bio text per network #1688
Comments
Yes! This is for https://mastodon.faithtree.social/@trbutler ? I assume you mean the @-mentions in your profile bio text, not the separate profile links below it? In either case, the difficulty is that Bluesky currently only links full URLs in profile bios (more: bluesky-social/atproto#2504 ), and its character limit for profile bio text is pretty small, just 256 chars, and we already steal over 1/3 of that for the "bridged from ..." footer. I'm reluctant to steal any more beyond that. One option could be #1374, which would let you put more info and links in a pinned post. |
Thanks, yes, that's the profile. Barring being able to get @-mentions to work, it still might be nice simply to be able to give a separate bio text for Bluesky, especially with the character limit you mention. For example, in my case, I might simply opt not to include the handles in the profile bio on Bluesky since they point incorrectly even if someone copies and pastes them into the search box. Being able to give a customized biographical text somehow combined with #1374 seems like it would be perfect. Thanks for the great tool, by the way. |
Custom bio text is an interesting feature request! Low priority at best, fair warning, but I'm happy to use this issue to track it. |
Came here to also request this! Not just for this reason, but for custom emojis in bios; on Mastodon custom emojis are supported in bio text, but obviously those don't bridge across to Bluesky, and then they use up even more of the limited text space. (Also, I wonder if the bridged by footer could actually be a Bluesky label rather than part of the bio?) |
@mashedkeyboard good instinct, bridged Bluesky profiles already have self-labels that declare them bridged! Not really a replacement for the bio text footer though, since those labels don't show up in the bsky.app or other UIs. I also tried running a standalone labeler (mod service) to apply those labels, #1388, but never got those to show up either. 🤷 More importantly though, they'd only ever be visible to people who already knew about the bridge and went to the extra effort to subscribe to that labeler, which isn't really good enough. |
My Mastodon profile includes references to handles for the profiles of the organizations I work at. I have those profiles and my own bridged using Bridgy Fed into Bluesky, including utilizing custom domains.
The one issue I notice is that my profile's bio references to those other accounts aren't linked on Bluesky, since they aren't converted to Bluesky format and thus are interpreted as plaintext. It seems as if it would be helpful if Bridgy Fed would convert those handles and/or if there were a way to give Bridgy Fed alternate profile text that is more appropriate to the destination.
