Become a sponsor to Subsurface
This is the project account for the Subsurface project - but in reality this is maintained by Dirk Hohndel (who is also the maintainer of Subsurface - what a coincidence).
Dirk lives in Portland, Oregon (that's part of the West Coast of the United States, for the geographically challenged), but was born in Germany.
After Linus started Subsurface, he handed things over to Dirk to maintain in 2012.
Subsurface, Subsurface-mobile, the Subsurface cloud infrastructure and everything else around Subsurface are done purely as hobby projects. There is no product here, there is no product-level support. And sponsorship isn't a way to pay for support. The Subsurface developers are doing this because they are passionate about good software, pretty much all of the active developers are also divers, and most of them just enjoy working on a fun project besides their day jobs.
The goal for the funds is to offset some of the cost of running the infrastructure of Subsurface. For the past ten years Dirk has paid all of these costs out of his own pocket - but in early 2022 he ended up (for completely unrelated reasons) creating a consulting company and figured "heck, I'll have to deal with taxes for that, anyway, so I might as well add a way to sponsor the Subsurface infrastructure costs".
So what are these infrastructure costs?
- server resources, storage, and bandwidth for the cloud storage, web site, mailing list, etc
- domain registrations
- developer certificates and signing certificates (what a rip-off)
It's humbling to see people support my work. And it's nice to see that our costs are covered by a diverse group of users. The desire to have more sponsors is mainly driven by the desire to distribute the load among more people. This is similar to our developer community, where having more people involved means that the ups and downs in each individual's ability to contribute has less of an effect on the project overall. The more people are engaged and involved, the more stable the project becomes. And sustainability and longevity of Subsurface really is the key goal here for me. To all who sponsor the project, regardless if the amount, a huge thank you.
