Amazing looking theme, i love it! Would it be possible to create a "soft" variant with a slightly lower contrast background?

Yup, I do want to add that eventually. It might be as simple as making the editor background a little brighter, but I need to see how that impacts the legibility of things like comments and other UI elements that are supposed to render "faintly" (like gitignored files). In the meantime, it should be pretty simple to change on your end with a theme override.
