i can imagine it would be a strain on servers if this were to get big without torrenting

I encourage the use of GitHub Releases to ensure there are not bandwidth concerns.

GitHub Release - Storage and bandwidth quotas
Each file included in a release must be under 2 GiB. There is no limit on the total size of a release, nor bandwidth usage

Therefore we don't need a torrent feature!
