Using Eutopia Fluid Type with Tailwind v4

Has anyone had any luck using Eutopia with TW4? I am having some issues and wondered what others might be doing. Here is some of the trouble I am having:

If I setup my spacing variables like this using a number scale, they work as intended. Overrides work properly and twMerge removes redundant classes. Not so bad and makes sense.

@theme {

  --spacing: initial;
  --spacing-2: 2rem;
  --spacing-12: 4rem;

However, if I want to use t-shirt sizes like this, it does not work.

--spacing: initial;
--spacing-sm: 2rem;
--spacing-lg: 4rem;

Is this by design in V4? Is there anyway to use t-shirt sizes correctly? It would be nice to make use of custom classes like used in Eutopia. Any ideas or feedback?

I am not sure if this is the answer, but this did seem to help:

this seems to work correctly now and styles get overridden properly, but twMerge does not work.
