Unfiltered list that we should add to the discussion.

  • "Sponsored" Plugin PRs #42
  • Revisit financial contribution based tiers.
  • Other forms of sponsorship we've not defined yet.
  • Whether we should actively engage new sponsors.
  • How more funding could be effectively spent.

I shared these thoughts in a few different channels but putting them "officially" here :)

I would clearly differentiate "sponsors" from "partnerships" based on the below:

  • A "sponsor" is an entity that has contributed via Open Collective and/or GitHub Sponsors.
    • This allows us to very clearly "tier" sponsors into different levels based on total historic contributions.
    • Get's us out of the complex and murky territory of "how much is an FTE worth" and "how much is xyz service worth" that we've been in when trying to figure out which "tier" a non-financial donation fits in.
  • A "partner" is essentially anything else outside of a general financial contribution.
    • This could be a service partner like we have with Netlify, Cloudflare, and DigitalOcean for hosting, a security partner such as CrabNebula for the security audits, and staffing partners for if an entity is wanting to contribute time for a person to work on Tauri, and development partners for a relationship where Tauri promotes a specific entity for contracted out development work.
    • Each partnership is going to be unique and I don't believe coming up with a unified definition of "these are the types of partnerships Tauri can have" makes sense imo. We want to be able to be flexible in the partnerships we take on out of interest for the potential partner and Tauri.

I don't think there's any new concepts here other than just clarifying a distinction between a "Sponsor" and a "Partner" to remove the mixed-bag we've gotten outside into to date.

That being said, I'm going to open a separate topic to kick off the discussion around CrabNebula as a formal "partner" and let's use this to track the financial sponsor types discussed above for sake of separating these out to work on in parallel.
