How do you bring people from the proprietary mindset to an open source mindset in planning, development, etc.
How do you eat an elephant? One bite at a time. How did we get from Waterfall to Agile? Its a slow process. Getting developers to conferences helps developers aware that they aren't the only one solving the issue and can work together.
With starting an open source project that was internal, how do you make it into a community?
The 4 Opens! Open Source (putting the code out there) is an easy place to start, but from there you need to back that up with open source with open community, open design and open development.
How do you do open source when your company's legal department doesn't want to let go of its IP and allow open source participation in the community? Explained the whole process start to finish with the legal department. Explaining the licenses. Need sign off from a VP and then the OSPO looks at it and then it gets open source. Compromise with a detailed review process and then relax the process down the road.
Governmental organizations? Do they need to join Foundations? We think they they can partner with them, but also just making connections in communities and building a network is valuable.
Director will say they want open source, but no one actually understands the project, the community. Big companies sometimes miss engineers that can do open source.
