In release 1.2, if the current zoom level is unavailable there is a camera symbol. It would be great if it only was a plain background color.

Btw, thank you for a great product!

I totally agree, but it's a bit tricky because we don't get any particular information about whether the file returned from Bing contains an image, or not. There's two ways to approach this:

  1. Checksum the image data and skip it if it matches the camera image
  2. Use the Bing metadata API to check whether imagery is available at a zoom level

Ah, I see. Maybe a simple check cpuld be to see if all tiles returned have the same checksum and then drop to plain background? (would probably fail for people in the midlle of the ocean but that may be irrelevent).
