"error: unsupported configuration version in file" while installing custom file format

I made my custom file format which includes "$schema": "https://lnav.org/schemas/format-v1.schema.json" field based on the fact that all sample files in the ~/.config/lnav/formats/default directory have this field.
When trying to install it with
$ lnav -i ./my_log.json
I'm getting the following error
error: unsupported configuration version in file: ./my_log.json -- https://lnav.org/schemas/format-v1.schema.json
Removing this field makes the error go away.
I'm confused.
