Version switcher / version history pattern

Context

Hi team! We're implementing versioning in Segment Journeys. One of the patterns I'm exploring as a part of this is a way to easily switch between versions and view all of the versions associated with a journey. I'd love your feedback on the options I'm exploring—here's the figma file.

Reasons a user may view and switch between versions:

• View the status of each version
• Access historical version metrics to compare performance across versions and measure the success of a campaign over time
• Understand the rationale and impact of prior journey changes for auditing and tracking purposes
• Archive a paused version to reduce costs
• Restore a previous version to revert changes

Explorations

• Option 1: A menu badge that allows users to easily switch between versions.
• Option 2: A version history button that opens a side panel with a timeline view. With this option, I've placed buttons as the header. I'm struggling to indicate when a version in the timeline is currently selected.
• Alternatives: I also have a few other options that explore a hybrid approach of 1&2, and some more comprehensive menu options that could go with number 1.

I also have one other wild card option, which is to have a "parent journey" page with a table that shows all versions in that journey.

Added feedback in the Figma file. In summary:

• Leaning toward a hybrid approach that combines options 1 and 2, giving users quick access to actions while still allowing them to explore more if needed.

Using Timeline for navigating flow versions

• To make it clearer which version is the current one, consider adding an icon and including the word “Current” in the version title for reinforcement.
• Timeline titles themselves aren’t interactive, but you can include a text link or a button like “View version” within the timeline content so users can access previous versions.

Regarding Vertical Tabs for navigation

The Paste team will review the accessibility implications of having focusable or interactive elements nested inside the Tab and will follow up.

Hey @jess-watson following our conversation, and after reviewing with the team, we've agreed to create a variant of the Timeline component that allows interactive elements in the Timeline title — for use cases like accessing history or versions of a specific flow.
