It would allow me to add support to Quickddit to quickly switch to YTPlayer and open/play. Other apps could benefit from this as well.

I could help with implementing, I've already added similar functionality to Quickddit.

A related note here, it does not seem to be possible to start the app with an URL passed. Would be nice.
