Feasibility of external drive passthrough as block device?

I just learnt that tart can pass block device¹ to guest that runs through AVF backend. Since external drives also show up in /dev/diskX, I think it may be feasible to do passthrough?

pros:

• practically (though not actually) support USB passthrough in AVF backend

cons:

• requires Sonoma²
• may require running as root (official doc² says you can do the open stuff in another helper process, but tart developer seems to have no luck¹)
