Shibboleth questions on a new Leaf deployment #540

Dear Leaf folks

I'm deploying Leaf 3.11 on Centos with Apache 2.4 and shibd. Two problems are occuring:

No records are being written to the Shibboleth logs:

This problem seems to have started last Nov. Shibboleth SP logging should be controlled by /etc/shibboleth/shibd.logger, which I attach below, and by /etc/shibboleth/native.logger. The former indicates a correct name for the log file in this line:

log4j.appender.shibd_log.fileName=/var/log/shibboleth/shibd.log

Accessing Leaf throws an error which returns this text in the browser:

Unknown or Unusable Identity Provider
The identity provider supplying your login credentials is not authorized for use with this service or does not support the necessary capabilities.

To report this problem, please contact the site administrator at [[email protected]](mailto:[email protected]).

Please include the following error message in any email:

Identity provider lookup failed at (https://omop-leaf-temp.hpc.mssm.edu/)

The httpd log contains these errors:

I think that 2 will be easier to solve after 1 is solved.

These changes fix the problem:

Permissions
- Make the shibd account and group the user and group of the directory storing shibboleth log files.
- Set drwxr-xr-x permissions on the directory storing shibboleth log files.
Configuration of shibboleth logging in shibd.logger
- Cannot use MB suffix for maxFileSize, despite what the log4j RollingFileAppender documentation says.
- Set log4j.rootCategory = INFO, shibd_log, warn_log in shibd.logger.

I think it might help to set up some time to review this on Zoom so we can quickly debug.

I have some questions in the mean time.

Was Shibboleth running even after the logs stopped in Nov. 2021?
It shouldn't make a difference, but have you tried with INFO? Trying to see if it logs for other options.
a. log4j.rootCategory=INFO, shibd_log, warn_log
Do you have any example of a working Shibboleth configuration in your department? We can check for differences.

Have you also tried checking the Shibboleth service to see if there are any errors systemctl status shibd.service?

Lastly, were any files moved into the /etc/shibboleth directory? It will help to confirm the SELinux labels to make sure they're all appropriate (ls -laZ).

RE your questions:

Yes, but in the Leaf 3.9 release VM.
No. I'll try INFO before we meet and write back.
Yes. The Leaf 3.9 release which I did works & uses Shibboleth. This one is based on that, but modified for Leaf 3.11. Reviewing changes is a good idea.

systemctl status shibd doesn't report errors. But systemctl status httpd does:

I need to answer your last question later.

@mh2727 and @ndobb , I have a hypothesis about why the shibd logs are not growing. Three of the logs have a maxFileSize=1000000 specified in /etc/shibboleth/shibd.logger:

And all of the logs except 2 have sizes that are slightly larger than 1,000,000:

My hypothesis is that almost all of the logs have hit this size limit, and they're not properly rolling over, or do whatever they're supposed to do.
